I attended the EETimes 2006 Ace Awards banquet last week at the Embedded Systems Conference, and was fortunate to be at a table where one hopeful sat nervously.

Tim Harvey, whose business card identifies him as "owner" is the mastermind behind his company CWAV's USBee AX Test Pod. Up against such industry giants as Agilent, Tektronix, LeCroy and Fiberbyte, Harvey claimed before the winners were announced that no matter what happened, it was an honor to be nominated. "We were happy in just being a finalist," said Harvey. "Winning against the products from the leading test equipment companies validates our product and business direction and shows insight as to what engineers really need day to day." Harvey went on to explain that his product is simple, compact and affordable--a focus he is committed to maintain.

It's becoming more difficult to win. This year, there saw a 70 percent increase in nominations for the awards. The judging panel considered more than 600 technologies and industry innovators. The Ultimate Product finalists, including CWAV, were chosen by expert editors as the most significant products introduced over the past 12 months. Winners were determined by a vote of EE Times and eeProductCenter readers.

Naturally, you expect the names of the industry giants to be read--but it's the David and Goliath outcomes that are the most memorable. So, congratulations to all--and especially to you Tim. Your joy at the mere fact of being nominated, and your elation upon winning that beautiful ACE Award was wonderful to observe.
