Pittsford, New York—Want to Web-enable your design? Check out the NM7010A-LF module from Saelig, Inc. It's a 1 x 2-inch lead-free network interface board that acts as a turnkey component for quickly adding Internet connectivity to microprocessor systems.

The NM7010A-LF avoids the burden of writing and/or running a TCP/IP (Internet Protocol) software stack. It can be used as a finished component for rapidly developing Internet- enabled systems.

Hardwired Stack

The NM7010A-LF is a drop-in network module based on the $5 W3100A hardwired TCP/IP stack chip from Korea-based WIZnet USA. The company's WIZnet TOP (TCP Offload Platform) has been designed into standalone DVRs, access controllers, remote-controllers, serial-to-Ethernet gateways, and network cameras, to name just a few applications.

In this application, Saelig's device includes WIZnet's W3100A chip, a RTL8201 Ethernet PHY (physical layer) device, and a MAG-JACK RJ-45 connector with transformer. The module also packs all requisite glue logic.

Offloading TCP Transmission Control Protocol) tasks can reduce processor burden and improve overall system performance, or reduce product cost, power, and size.

Multiple Connections

Up to four independent connections can be supported simultaneously, with dynamic buffer allocation for each channel. That ensures a sustained loop-back performance of 8-Mbits/s.

Notably, the NM7010A-LF offers a complete Ethernet-I2C interface. It also gives you auto-detecting 10/100 Base-T Ethernet with half/full duplex operation

Protocol Power

The NM7010A-LF supports UDP, IP, ARP, ICMP, DCHP, ARP, DLC, and Ethernet MAC (media access control). It supports four independent sockets simultaneously (with dynamic buffer allocation for each channel).

With 16-kbytes of embedded data buffering, the NM7010A-LF comprises a simple socket API (application programming interface), for snag-free application programming. It also provides network status indicator support.

The NM7010A-LF is optionally available without the RJ-45 socket. That can let you mount it on a back panel, for example.

The 1 x 2-in. module operates from 3.3-V, but its I/Os are 5-V-tolerant. It interfaces with standard 100-mil sockets.

Applications include remote access to equipment via the Internet or LANs in industrial automation, data gathering, instrumentation, medical devices, metering and card readers.

The NM7010A-LF is priced at less than $20. The module, and WIZnet's W3100A chip, are both available now from stock from WIZnet USA distributor Saelig Co. Inc. The W3100A is also available for core licensing.
