Microsemi Corporation announced a cost-effective PowerDsine midspan series for power over Ethernet in Voice over IP (VoIP) and Wireless LAN Networks.

Designated the 3500 Series, the new midspan family is designed to deliver safe power over standard Ethernet cabling to existing 10/100Mbps network devices, such as VoIP phones, WLAN access points and IP network video cameras in enterprise installations. Two versions are offered: the Model 3524 midspan which provides 24 ports, and the Model 3512 with 12 ports.

PowerDsine power over Ethernet technology is the first to supply reliable power to 10/100Mbps devices. When connected to a central uninterruptible power supply (UPS), the 3500 models also provide a cost-effective way to distribute power remotely while ensuring network operation during electrical power failures.

The PowerDsine 3500 PoE midspan family offers long-term investment protection to enterprises by providing a scalable solution that not only supports existing 10/100 devices, but also will enable new PoE applications and services without the need for additional upgrades. Thus the new PowerDsine midspans offer a simple, cost-effective upgrade to power over Ethernet while protecting existing investments in recently purchased Ethernet switches.

Steve Litchfield, president of Microsemi's Analog Mixed Signal Group, said, "The two main drivers for our 3500 Midspan line are the rapidly emerging IP phones and wireless LAN access points. In particular, the IP phone benefits significantly because IP phones and PCs can share the high-bandwidth pipe while reducing costs by consolidating power, data and voice on the network."

PowerDsine's 3500 PoE Midspan family is currently available for field trials, with general availability in March.
